What it takes for a workation to actually work: four years of HINOMAD

HINOMAD has run workations for four years across five regions of Gangwon: Yangyang, Sokcho, Yeongwol, Pyeongchang, and Gangneung. Along the way we visited overseas nomad hubs like Bali, Chiang Mai, Lisbon, and Madeira looking for what makes them work. We found one answer: a hub is a system, not a vibe.

A pretty cafe and an ocean view don't make people stay. What keeps people around is the people and opportunities they can keep meeting in that space. That's why HINOMAD brings in visiting experts and brands as ongoing program partners, not one-off guests. It's not a single event that brings people back, it's the predictability of knowing they can keep showing up.

The numbers back it up. Across 22 cumulative events and 774 paid participants, 20% came back with a friend. A good experience doesn't stay with one person, it brings the next one along.

Expanding into family workations and workations for foreign travelers surfaced another fact: a workation isn't an extension of tourism. What a one-off traveler leaves behind is different from what someone who stays leaves behind. A tourist leaves photos. Someone who stays leaves relationships.

HINOMAD LAB, which revives idle space in Sokcho's old downtown, grew out of this same observation. A relational population only becomes a settled one when the people who stayed are connected to local merchants and young people. A workation is a beginning, not an end.
